James Pennington (P-Tech) and I facilitated an excellent workshop at the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce last week working for the B2B Centre (www.nb2bc.co.uk) on behalf of the University of Warwick’s Digital Lab.

James and I took a large audience through the basics of online marketing. It’s always an intense day because most people don’t realise how much there is to think about.  It can often have a profound effect with people reconsidering their entire business model.  We stress the need to have clear objectives and goals,  the need to position the business as being different from the competition, and the need to understand customer needs and activity at a very detailed level.  Not what people expect.

Although people understand the power of the internet they frequently ignore the fact that it has empowered customers just as much as businesses. They (we) have more power to find alternatives and make comparisons both for consumer goods and for B2B products and services.

So it’s not just about websites and Facebook and Twitter and AdWords etc. etc. it’s actually about what you do, who you do it for and how you can do it better.
